About Therapy

1943938549It’s not easy to acknowledge that things aren’t how we want them to be.

We do the best we can with the demands of adulthood, but sometimes we hit a point where we ask ourselves, “What the hell am I doing?”

It doesn’t take much to send us on a downward spiral. Work gets busy, and we stop being able to get to the gym.

Our friends aren’t around much anymore, and we’re left feeling isolated.

We get sick, and it feels impossible to overcome.

Suddenly, we’re no longer where we want to be – but how do you get back on track? You’ve already taken the first step.

I can help you. Whether you’re struggling with the demands of school, work, or just life in general, we can get you back on a path to success. We will reverse that downward spiral and get you back on an upward trajectory.

By the end of our work together, you’ll understand what you need to feel like you’re living a satisfying and joy-filled life. And you’ll have learned the tools needed to get you there!

We’ll work together online, which lets me meet you where you are. Life is busy, and doing this work can be challenging. The online format is flexible, comfortable, and convenient!

2003674943Your success in therapy largely depends on this…

It’s our relationship and how good of a fit we are to work together.

And I want to be sure that you feel comfortable with me.

The single most important factor in what makes therapy successful is how you feel about the therapist you’re working with.

I will listen to your needs and only work with you if I’m certain my approach will benefit you. I’m experienced in a range of therapeutic approaches that allow me to customize my work with you to your specific needs. I’ll always tell you what I think can help you and why.

Ultimately, working with me is about your journey – I’ll regularly check in with you about how the experience is for you and will shift as needed.

When you’re at the point where you decide to start therapy, you’re likely already feeling like things are piled up against you.

Step by step, you will get back on track. You’ll identify where you want to go, and then we will set achievable goals to help you get there. As you accomplish your goals, we will continue to build on your success until you arrive at your destination.

My passion is understanding what makes people happy. Once we understand what makes you happy, it is about forming the habits that will allow you to get there.

I will give you the tools to form those habits, but most importantly, I’ll be there to support you while you work to implement them. It’s tough to develop healthy habits. It requires planning, motivation, and resilience to have these activities become automatic.

I will help you in all of those phases and take a typically painful and frustrating process – and make it less painful.

Tell me your story.

You’ve had a unique journey that’s led you to this point. I want to hear about the victories and failures that you’ve experienced.

It’s been said that life is filled with 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows. I do not doubt that you have experienced frustration, sadness, anger, and pain throughout your life and are still holding on to much of it.

Our work together allows you to unburden yourself. You can share these difficult experiences and free yourself from them in a confidential space.

I know your path hasn’t been easy, but I will help you see how you can cultivate your innate strengths to overcome challenges in your life. You’ll overcome those challenges and then realize your full potential.

709483576 1The space we create…

It’ll be free of judgment.

I have successfully worked with hundreds of clients from all walks of life. I have seen how pain manifests in people and leads to difficult behavior and experiences. You’ve done your best, but things are hard now. It can get better.

It’ll be tailored to you.

We all have blind spots. We all have habits that hold us back. Through our work, we will see what’s missing in your life and clarify why it’s not there. Feeling engaged and accomplished in our work and play is essential to our well-being. Having quality relationships is also necessary. We’ll find out how to strengthen any areas of your life that aren’t where you want them to be.

Regardless of where you are, we will get you where you want to be.

It’ll be directed by a plan.

You’ll identify what you want from life, and we will create a plan to achieve those desires. Maybe it’s having more success in your career and perhaps being more satisfied with your marriage or friendships. Maybe it’s spending less time looking at other people living their lives and getting you off the sidelines.

We will find out why you’re not caring for yourself the way you deserve. You will learn to prioritize yourself and implement skills to navigate daily challenges skillfully. Along with learning new coping strategies, we will focus on the scaffolding beneath you – living in a way that feels satisfying and makes you less vulnerable to negative emotions and behaviors.

About Me

GagliardijeffAt 29 years old, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Life as I knew it ended, and I had no idea what to do about it.

I felt I would lose everything I had worked so hard for – a good job at an insurance company, a nice house – my path to the American Dream.

But at the same time, I realized that those things had never really made me happy. In fact, I was decidedly unhappy. Stressed out and questioning what the hell I was doing, I was always asking myself whether a paycheck was worth all the aggravation.

I had to make a change; it took a medical diagnosis to show me that.

I wasn’t sure I could change my life, but I had to try.

As I fought to get better, I found that social workers were the most helpful to me in my journey. So, I wanted to do what they did.

I wanted to help people like me change their lives.

I wanted to help young adults find a better path than I took.

I wanted to help people who felt stuck in a rut find a way out.

So, that’s what I did…

And it was the greatest thing I ever could have done. I stopped everything and did something I never thought I would: quit my job and return to school.

After two years of intense effort, I became a social worker. I learned about the things holding me back and how to overcome them. I got healthier than I had ever been.

Then I did something else I never thought I would do: I went back to school again and received my doctorate.

I’ve worked hard and gained as much knowledge and experience as possible to help my clients the best I can. Now, I can spend my days helping people like you achieve their dreams!

When I’m not doing therapy…

I moved to New York City a couple of months before the COVID pandemic. I’m now trying to experience all the parts of the city that I hadn’t been able to experience after I moved. I love exploring all the awesome museums, restaurants, and live entertainment venues.

Despite spending much of my life not understanding how people could enjoy running for exercise, living so close to Riverside and Central Park has inspired me to start running, and now I love it.

You can make a change, too!

You’ll take what you learn in therapy out into the world and write a new story for yourself. You’ll have setbacks, but learn from them and try again.

And remember: You’re not alone. I’ll be with you every step of the way!

I want you to understand your life, know what you want, and have a plan to achieve it. And when you do, you won’t need therapy anymore. And that’s what I want for you! There’s nothing more satisfying to me than seeing a client grow and having them tell me they’re ready to move on from our work.

I will not waste your time. If I’m not the best person to help you, I will tell you and help you find that person. If you don’t feel like I’m the best person to help you, I will encourage you to tell me so I can shift my approach to your needs. And if that’s not enough, I will help you find someone who can.
